Tuesday's Tutorials

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

I'm very excited to share a special new feature on my blog with you today!  I have a layout and a tutorial!  I plan on posting tutorials (almost) every Tuesday!  They will be anything from super simple techniques that you can use on your layouts, cards, or Project Life spreads to step-by-step instructions for creating layouts, photography tips, and more!  I'm really excited about this new feature and if there is ANYTHING you would like to see, please don't hesitate to comment and let me know :)

I took these photos of my daughter a few days before she turned four years old.  She was actually getting her spring pictures taken at school that day so I thought it would be fun to "practice" a few poses beforehand...

I knew I wanted to have a lot of texture on this page and I had this idea of scrunching up paper in my mind for a while before I formulated exactly how I was going to achieve the look.

I took these photos in my bathroom where the light was shining in through the window absolutely perfect that day!  I also used the new iPhone app, PicTapGo, from Totally Rad to adjust the shadows and soften the shots.

I used paper and embellishments from the March Studio Calico kits +Add-ons for this layout.  I have to say that SC really knocked it out of the park with their kits this month.  Wow!  I immediately dove into my box the minute it was delivered and whipped out three layouts in one afternoon!  I honestly don't think that's ever happened before!

And here's how I achieved the textured look on my layout in a few simple steps:

Misted Book Paper Scrunching Tutorial:

First, you need to gather your supplies and here's what you'll need:

1.)  A piece of book paper.  I used some I had leftover from a previous SC class.  You can scour garage sales or flea markets for cheap, old books.  I recommend using book paper because it's lightweight and it soaks up the spray ink well.

2.)  3 or 4 colors of spray ink/mists.  I use Mister Huey's, but any spray ink should do the trick.  For this project I chose a yellow, a light orange, and a darker orange to give it sort of an "ombre" effect.

3.)  Scissors or a paper trimmer.

4.)  An area where you can get messy with your inks.  I use my SC boxes to mist my projects in.  I'm all about the re-using of my SC boxes, lol!

Next, you'll need to cut your book paper into strips.  The strips can be as wide or as narrow as you like.  I used my Fiskars scissors to cut my page and I didn't care if the strips were straight, crooked, different sizes, etc.  It's all going to get smushed up anyway, so I wasn't being too particular.

***Don't cut all the way through your book paper.  Make sure you leave a little room at the top when you're cutting, about an inch, so that the strips don't all fall apart from each other.

Next is the fun part!  Mist that paper up good!  You can't mess it up, so have some fun and get creative!  I started with the lightest color (yellow) at the top and worked my way down.

Now you'll want to turn your paper over and let it dry.  I didn't have to wait too long because as I said above, the book paper really absorbs the mist well and I like the effect that it leaves on the opposite side of the paper.

Next you can start scrunching.  This is also pretty fun, but don't get too crazy and rip it up, unless that's the look you're going for and in that case, GO FOR IT!  There's no right or wrong in creating as long as you're having fun with it!  I actually scrunched my paper before it was completely dry, but I was in a hurry and it works well either way (slightly wet or dry).

And finally, you're ready to add your scrunched up, smushed up, paper piece to your layout or card!  Like I said above, I really like the look of the reverse side after all of the misting, but it's up to you which side you use :)  I also added in extra strips of gold polka dot vellum from Dear Lizzy on my layout...I just stuck them in wherever I pleased amidst the other strips.  I really liked the effect of the extra vellum strips and I think it would be fun to add in other strips of patterned paper as well, or even ribbon and twine!  The possibilities are endless!

Well, I hope you enjoyed my little paper scrunching tutorial today and I hope you try it out on one of your creations!  In fact if you do try it out, I would love to see!  Link up your creation using the "paper scrunch method" in the comment section of this post by Tuesday, March 26th 2013 and I'll randomly draw a winner to receive some "happy mail" from me!

Good luck, happy scrunching, and have a great day!

Project Life - Week 10 and Giveaway Winners

Happy Monday, friends :)

I'm finally getting my post up...it's been a day...two sick kiddos and just "Monday" stuff...ahhh, deep breath and here we go with Week 10...

This was a full week.  My little girl turned four on Monday and transitioned from a crib to a "big girl" bed, our weather was extra wacky, and my hubby and youngest son got the flu...again...

I was so excited about this week's spread because I got to use the March Project Life kit from Studio Calico that I've been waiting to get since January!  It was soooooo worth the wait and I love every piece :)

Aren't we all??? Spring, where are you???

We had snow at the beginning of the week, but ended up with a "spring teaser" day on Saturday.  And it didn't last long because today it's 40 and freezing with strong, gusty winds.  Brrr.....

The temps weren't too bad during the week so the boys spent a lot of time in the woods exploring and knocking down old, rotten tree stumps.  Boys will be boys, lol!

I did get to jump on the ol' bike over the weekend and it felt so good to ride, although I paid for it the next day :)

And here's the full spread for Week 10...

Overall, this week's spread was a breeze to put together, thanks to my SC Project Life kit!  I really liked the muted tones I used and it was hard not to hoard some of the adorable cards.

I also want to thank everyone for their comments about the new blog look and name.  I'm very excited about the changes and I'm hoping to add some new features and maybe even some products (gasp!) on here in the near future.  I also have a few exciting surprises that I'll share with you soon :)  And the winners of my little giveaway are...shelly, ejmom, Nelmarie, and Sandra!  I know I said three winners, but I have plenty for four so congrats and please send me an email at adriennealvis@yahoo.com so I can get your information and get your stamps to you as soon as possible!  Thank you all for you wonderful comments and continued support, it means the world to me :)

Have a great day and TFL!

My Favorite Memory

TGIF!

Here's a layout I created using one of the photos that I took of my three kiddos at my youngest son's birthday party a few weeks ago...

I was really inspired by the lines of the yellow and blue patterned paper, so I decided to make a bolder, more graphic statement with my paper cuts.

I used lots of random bits and pieces from my stash and some paper from my February's SC kits for this layout.

I also used some of my Mister Huey's mists and I've been bound and determined to use them more often than I have been lately :)

I love this shot and it's "my favorite memory" from that day...it's just so "them"!

Have a great day and TFL!

Change is Good and a Giveaway

Happy Thursday, my friends!  Believe it or not this is my 300th post!

As you can see, I've changed up my blog a bit.  I would love to hear your thoughts, comments, concerns, or questions about the new look and the new name which is Adrienne Alvis Designs Paper Fab.  (Ahhh! I think I'm going through a blog-gy identity crisis here!!!) I've been thinking about doing this for quite some time now, but I need some feedback :)

I like change and I think it's good to progress and change in certain ways throughout life, but I'm also prone to the whole idea of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" mantra.  Let me know how you feel about the blog changes and to show you my sincere appreciation for you help, I will be giving away three goodie bags of Studio Calico stamps that I've purged recently.  Some are gently used, but a lot are still in the packaging :)  Just leave me a comment saying what you think about the blog changes and anything you'd like to see on here in the future.  I'll randomly draw three names on Sunday, March 10, 2013. Thanks so much!  I love you all and I'm looking forward to the future and even bigger changes coming soon!

Have a great day!

Project Life - Week 9 and an Insert

Happy Wednesday!

Yes...it's Week 9...already...

I can't believe that I've made it almost 10 weeks with my Project Life!  I'm totally giving myself a pat on the back right now, lol!  It's been such a great journey and I am enjoying it so much that I know I'll make it all the way to Week 52 this year!

Here's what I came up with for my Week 9 spread, which I have to say is one of my faves so far :)

I was inspired by my daughter's choice of toenail polish for my color scheme this week...oh, and my cute little "Yum" flyer I got in the mail from Fab.com.

Yeah...I have a slight Scandal obsession...I honestly can't get enough of the show and I just had to document it in my spread this week ;)

I used lots of SC printables and bits from recent kits for this week's spread.  I also used some great products from some of my favorite designers...Life.Love.Paper, Hello Forever, and Blinks of Life.

This week was busy, busy, busy...but in a good way :)

I tucked a tiny journaling card into this cute pink polka dot pocket about my visit with my friend who I hadn't seen since last year.  I miss her so much already...

I added an insert to this week's spread to document my daughter's fourth birthday party...

I used a divided Martha Stewart page protector that I got a long time ago at Staples.  It worked great for the size I needed and I filled in both sides with photos from the party.

And here's the full spread for my Week 9 of Project Life...

Thanks for joining me on my PL journey!  I hope you're enjoying yours as much as I'm enjoying mine :)

Have a great day and thanks for looking!

Oh, Happy Day!

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

It's the beginning of a new month and that means a new sketch from the talented Shanna Noel!

And here's my take on the sketch...

I stuck very close to the sketch and decided to split one photo into two so I could make my son (who's holding up six fingers for turning six) stand out.  I also added lots of vellum speech bubbles and small embellishments around the layered photos.

I used lots of SC printables and some bits and pieces from recent kits for this page.

Now that you've seen my take on this amazing sketch, be sure to check out how everyone else got creative with it...we even have a few new players this month!  And don't forget to give these amazing ladies some love :)
